I created these circle earrings from solid natural copper that I have cut shaped, dimple textured, and oxidized. The earrings hang from large sterling silver ear wires. The oxidization process gives the copper a rainbow appearance, which appears brighter and more colorful in direct light and darker and more gray in dimmer lighting.
Copper is one of the most popular metals in the world. A versatile and very affordable metal, copper is used in numerous ways, from medical instruments, weapons, coins, jewelry, machinery and technology. Known for its beautiful reddish-brownish color, copper is a favorite among jewelry lovers. While copper does not rust in the way that iron does, it does develop a green patina over time. The Statue of Liberty, which is made entirely of copper, is the perfect example of a copper patina. People are sometimes turned off by copper because of the fact that it can turn your skin green. This occurs when the metal oxidizes and reacts with the salty sweat from your body, which is essentially causing the copper to patina and stain your skin. While a green copper patina can be beautiful, like with The Statue of Liberty, green skin is not! Thankfully, green copper stains are not permanent. You can simply wash it off with ordinary soap and water. These earrings have sterling silver ear wires to keep the copper from having direct contact with your skin, and to prevent resulting green skin stains!
